Great Netbook Deal

About 30 days ago I got an Acer Aspire One "netbook"

Ever since I've gotten a lot of comments whenever I've used it in public.

It is one of the two more/less standard configurations--Intel Atom processor (single core), 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, Windows XP with an 8.9" screen.

I've found it works really well while I'm traveling.  The keyboard is fine for typing from my point of view (I do touch type).  The screen at 1024 x 600 is a little "short" on the vertical size but I'm getting used to it. Read more »

Power Brick Insanity

Why can’t the engineers of the world figure out a standard set of power adapters and plugs? Every electronic device has its own AC adapter with a different plug and voltage. It’s stupid.  There is some progress with phones, cameras, etc using the mini-USB plug for charging. Read more »

Powering Your Toys on the Road

I “joke” with the TSA agents looking at the x-ray of my backpack I carry onto planes that it is a walking Radio Shack.

I have the usual electronic travel toys: notebook computer, MP3 player, noise canceling headphones, wireless mouse, cell phone, etc. I also occasionally carry a portable printer and/or a portable scanner. Read more »

Why Do They Do That?

You cleaned out the closet you call your hard drive, now its time to clean the Windows to speed up your computer.

It seems that every program recently has decided it’s a good idea to install an automatic update program that sits in memory all the time, running and checking for that update that comes out once every month or two.

Most of those same programs also check for updates when you start the program, so why do you need that update "right now?" Read more »
