New Media Expo Day 1

I really have to say I didn't expect much from Gary Vaynerchuck of Wine Library TV (probably because I didn't know who he was or anything about Wine Library TV).

His talk started with the video of him on Conan O'Brian.

I was hoping to post a link to a video of his talk, but I can't find a video on-line, despite the large number of cameras present.  That's more likely a tribute to the difficulty searching video than the lack of one.

(I did find a short video finally)...

The talk was great.  The key take away is understand who you are and execute against that knowledge.  Gary knew in the 4th grade he wanted to own the Jets, he may not be there (yet), but it did help him know that turning down a high 5 figure speaking invitation because it conflicted with a Jets game.

The key to his Internet success is community and content, built through patience and effort.  He personally answers 750-1000 emails a day.  A great quote from his "if content is king, marketing is queen and the queen rules the household."  Hang in there, your 8 fans will turn into 11 and grow, there aren't a lot of instant successes, but you can build a successful brand.

He feels new media is a gold rush, people who establish themselves in their niche will win, even if your niche is 40 year olds still living at home.

When doing videos, etc, he thinks you shouldn't edit, just correct your mistakes on screen and move on.  It lets the viewers see you are genuine.  There's the "Hugh Grant Syndrome" -- you can make a mistake, admit your are wrong and move on.

38% of his subscribers just listen to the show, they don't watch the video.

You are not going to control your message, the universe will--get used to it.

His bottom line is patience and community.
